Gunna keep this short because I've been delaying on my hw! I'm meeting my mentor for the first time on Monday and I was supposed to have read a couple - 9? - research articles by then and I've only read 2...
To sum up Friday, I first went to a Geriatric meeting in the morning where Jena's pharmacy resident was presenting findings on a paper about Alzheimer's medication and how most of them don't really work (aka the patient very very modestly improves on cognitive tests). It was interesting because even though these meds don't work, the culture with patients is that they expect them to prescribe you SOMETHING. Hence, the over-prescription with antibiotics when patients have a cold.
My brother was at orientation at UT, so I talked to over the phone about his schedule at the Health Sciences Library. Thennn, I met 5 other students in the MSTAR program at a didatic session, which happens 12-2 pm every Friday. The presenters were the mentors of the students and they just had powerpoint presentations explaining their projects. In the evening, I also got the chance to mingle with these students once again at Dr. Busby-Whithead's, the director the Geriatric division at UNC, home for dinner. I think it's good practice social networking but, as a very introverted person who doesn't spend THAT much time in social functions, I find it really tiring interacting in this kind of environment - you're trying to make an impression with the doctors/researchers yet don't want to seem pushy or stepping over other medical students while they're talking but you don't want to seem tooo polite and shy. I also find myself awkward with social etiquette, how to greet older people yet soon-to-be colleagues properly. And I think learning how to talk properly comes with experience and time.
Today, my mom called in the morning to chat and we talked a while about many things - my time here in Chapel Hill, issues with my dad, my brother's enjoyment of UT. There are some times where I feel comfortable talking about biblical truths/reminders to my mom and today was one of them.
And I was finally able to watch Avengers!:

Black Widow is sooo good at fighting... I liked her the best =) I told Kevin that I could see him as being Hawkeye and he agreed since he feels like the Asian guy in movies always plays a character that has to be really sharp, exact, and skilled at something - like acrobats, martial arts, techy-stuff. Playin' off that stereotype.
